How Much Tip Should You Give?

Tipping culture varies around the world. In Pakistan, tipping is not always expected, but it is appreciated โ€” especially in restaurants, hotels, and for delivery riders.

Tipping in Pakistan โ€” Full Guide

Restaurants

Most high-end restaurants in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad include a service charge of 5โ€“10% on the bill. If no service charge is included, leaving 10โ€“15% is considered generous and appreciated by the staff.

Food Delivery (Foodpanda, Bykea, etc.)

Delivery riders in Pakistan often earn low base wages. Even a small tip of PKR 50โ€“150 per order makes a real difference. Many apps now have an in-app tip option at checkout.

Hotels & Hospitality

For porters, room service, and housekeeping in Pakistani hotels, PKR 100โ€“300 per service is standard. For high-end hotels, 10% of the service value is appropriate.

Barbers & Salons

A tip of PKR 50โ€“200 is common for barbers and salons depending on the quality of service and the price of the service.

๐Ÿ’ก Bill Splitting Tip

When splitting a bill among friends, it is easier to round up slightly and leave the extra as tip. For example, if each person owes PKR 423, each pays PKR 450 โ€” the extra PKR 27 per person adds up to a reasonable tip for the waiter.

Tip Calculation Formula

The math behind tip calculation is straightforward:

  • Tip Amount = Bill ร— (Tip% รท 100)
  • Total with Tip = Bill + Tip Amount
  • Per Person = Total with Tip รท Number of People

For example: A PKR 5,000 bill with 15% tip among 4 people: Tip = PKR 750 | Total = PKR 5,750 | Per person = PKR 1,437.50

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tipping mandatory in Pakistan?
No, tipping is not legally required or universally expected in Pakistan. However, it is a kind gesture that helps service workers who earn low wages, and is increasingly common in urban restaurants.
What if the restaurant already added a service charge?
Check your bill carefully. If a service charge of 5โ€“10% is already included, you do not need to add more. You may still leave a small cash tip directly for excellent service.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
Our calculator splits equally. For uneven splits (different dishes), calculate each person's share of the food separately, then apply the tip percentage to each person's share.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
In Pakistan, tipping on the total bill amount (after taxes and service charges) is the easiest and most common approach.
